WASPX– a recommendation

We are spending a few days in Hawkhurst on the Kent and Sussex borders. On our return from eating out in Hastings (see next post) Monday night we were greeted by five or six hornets. In daylight I identified their nest under the tiles, so we contacted the local wasp and hornet control firm – WASPX – run by Len Reader. We just got the answerphone – clearly business is brisk at the moment dealing with all the wasp and hornet problems.

Early evening, however, I got a call from Len's wife – Len would get to us as soon as possible. He arrived about 7.15pm. Within the hour he had dealt with four wasps nests and, most importantly, the hornets' nest, which were all in the house. Like the wasps, the hornets had been nesting under the house tiles. Once Len had injected the insecticide powder up into the nest, there were around 25 hornets flying about. An hour or so later they had all gone and this morning there's no sign of them.

"They would have doubled or trebled in a week," said Len. "There are a lot of wasps and an increasing number of hornets around this year. In the UK hornets used to be confined to the south but now they are being reported as far north as Yorkshire. Hornets love eating bees – they treat them as honey drops!"

Len operates within a 15 mile radius of Hawkhurst and I can certainly recommend his reasonably priced service.
