2007 Clos de Chaumont, Saumur-Champigny, Domaine de la Perruche

2007 Clos de Chaumont, Saumur-Champigny, Domaine de la Perruche
I'll admit to being perplexed. Last Thursday we tried the 2009 Clos de Chaumont and were surprised and disappointed – thin fruit and high acidity, which was particularly surprising in a 2009 red and when the straight 2009 Saumur-Champigny from Perruche had had plenty of attractive fruit.

Trying the 2007 only adds to the sense of puzzlement as this is an attractive Saunmur-Champigny from a difficult year with good concentration of spicy black fruits with a black pepper and clove character.

The 45ha Domaine de la Perruche in Montsoreau belongs to Jacques and Anne Beaujeau. They bought the estate in 2002.

I’ll tell you s’thing, Jim.

Had two visitors – unexpected – at 10.30 this morning. Ladies from Haute-Savoie on holiday here (Bages). They came upon recommendation from a restaurant where they had drunk “my wine” (which one , they couldn’t tell). We tasted a few and they thought they recognized “it”, at last (later on, they proved to be right, by the way).
One of them loved it (and bought a few bottles), the other one wasn’t impressed at all (understatement). Moreover, she “did not like” screw caps (without any clear explanation).

So, you being perplexed is quite understandable: wines don’t taste the same all of the time (mood, climate, atmosphere, food, menstrual cycle – I’m not joking ).
As soon as I mentioned this very cuvée had been appreciated by Andreas Larsson, and was available at “Auberge du Vieux Puits” in Fontjoncouse (the new and only *** in Languedoc), the wine was judged excellent in every respect.
Perplexed, did you say ?

A hint: go for the Clos de Chaumont once again, you might love it then!
